FAQ

What is the difference between having a fully upholstered headboard on The Essex and a headboard with muslin on the reverse side?

We offer two options for headboard upholstery–one in which the back is fully upholstered in your choice of fabric or leather, and one with a black muslin upholstered onto the back. If you plan to place your bed against a wall, you may opt for muslin upholstery on reverse; however, if you are floating your bed in a space, full upholstery is the right choice.

What kind of support is included for my mattress? Are any other components necessary?

The Essex is made with a system of hardwood slats milled from solid poplar wood. Each slat is 2.25” wide and spaced 3” apart along the foundation of the bed, and additionally secured with center support legs (2 for Queen sizes, 3 for King and Cal King).

With this highly durable foundation, The Essex does not require a box spring; however, a box spring can be accommodated if preferred.

Can I use an adjustable mattress or frame with The Essex?

Our beds were designed for use with our support system in mind, however many customers have used alternative support systems with success.

We are not able to confirm the compatibility of specific systems with Maiden Home frames. Please refer to our Bed Dimensions PDF for dimensions of the bed cavity to determine if your specific system will be compatible.

If you are interested in using an adjustable base, our interior designers can create a custom invoice for your order at design@maidenhome.com. This custom bed will be crafted without the interior side rails and will provide the open cavity needed to use your own support system. Please note that this customization renders your piece final sale, and your warranty will be voided should you choose to use a support system other than the one Maiden Home provides.

What is the recommended mattress height?

The Essex Bed has a two inch inset into the frame for a mattress. Our styling recommendation for The Essex Bed is a mattress between ten and twelve inches high. With a mattress at this height, there will be approximately eight to ten inches of the mattress exposed.

Will my mattress fit within the Essex Bed?

The Essex Bed is designed to fit most standard mattresses of the corresponding size, with an additional inch of length and width included to accommodate different types of bedding and slight differences in sizing between different mattress types. Our Bed Dimensions PDF includes the full dimensions for interior mattress space for your reference. We recommend comparing the dimensions of your mattress with this measurement to confirm fit.

Can I order just the headboard for The Essex?

Our beds are only available to order as a complete set with the side rails and footboard.

What are the legs made out of and what finish options are available?

Our artisan partners hand select each material for its beauty and unique character. The Essex’s legs are expertly handcrafted using solid ash, a robust Appalachian hardwood. Our ash wood is domestically sourced from forests in the eastern United States and has been certified and verified sustainable by the US Forest Association.

The Essex’s legs are completed with your choice of six lacquered hues specially finished to highlight the natural grain and character of the wood. Due to the natural materials used, each piece will possess a unique, one-of-a-kind character and may slightly vary.

Can I order wood finish samples?

Wood finish samples for The Essex are available for order here. Please note, variation in grain and texture is to be expected between your wood sample and final piece, given the natural materials used. We’ll be happy to refund your swatch purchase less 10% for handling if returned within 30 days of the original ship date.

Crosby Tuscan Leather Couches and King Essex Bed

I don't typically write reviews, but the furniture shopping process was so exhausting...this was warranted. Full disclosure, we've only owned our MH furniture for roughly 3 weeks, so I cant yet opine as to long term durability....

We purchased two 7ft bench seat Crosby, Tuscan Brown Leather couches, and a king Essex bed in Oyster performance fabric, during the heat of COVID, following an exhaustive search which included all the major brick and mortar stores and direct to customer online providers. Ultimately we didn't feel like Crate and Barrel/West Elm's quality justified their price, the online shops products wouldn't last, and RH's prices were too hard to justify, though the quality was there. We wanted couches that could withstand kids, dogs, etc. Couches we can use for the next 30 years. The swatches provided were excellent representations of what was delivered, and in our opinion, the final product is at par with RH's quality, and a significant step above CB/WE. The leather is thick and feels durable, yet remains buttery soft to the skin. The house smells like a new car....an expensive one. Scratches show, but we like the look, and they can be removed easily.

Prior to delivery, we were notified that there were issues with our two couches that had been identified by the shipping contractor. After consulting MH, the couches were shipped with the imperfections, which turned out to be what looked like two small burn holes in the same location of both couches. I'm not sure I would have noticed, but after mailing pictures of the imperfections, MH is sending out a specialist to replace the panels on both couches. Needless to say, we've been pleased with the customer service.

The Essex bed is well made, all hardwood...very heavy. Our only complaint is the screw for the center support leg doesn't screw in flush with the support beam, so it impedes the cross bar support from sitting flush. We had to shim a few of the cross bars with cardboard to keep them from knocking. Easy fix, but an issue that might be easily remedied during the build process.

Build/Delivery times were approximately 3 months. CB and RH times were twice that last time we checked. We were kept up to date through the process.

All in all, very pleased with the Maiden Home experience. Such large expenditures made sight unseen are nerve wracking, and we felt like MH did a commendable job of putting many of our concerns to rest. We'll continue to recommend their products, and can see ourselves ordering additional pieces in the future.

Essex Bed

5 stars. I ordered my Essex bed in Bone, in Performance Textured Linen. It is gorgeous, 56" high. I am so happy with customer service, they were so easy to connect with and very helpful in finalizing a few decisions based on size and fabric. The bed came in their prescripted time frame. The delivery was highly professional. I look forward to working with Maiden Home with future purchases.
