FAQ

How is The Thompson’s wood frame constructed? What finish options are available?

The Thompson Canopy's four poster frame is hand-carved with rounded corner detailing from solid ash wood, domestically sourced from sustainable forests in the eastern United States, and kiln-dried to prevent warping and splitting over time. From raw materials to joinery to finish, The Thompson is refined by hand to bring out the inherent character and natural beauty of its solid ash wood frame–designed to age over time to masterful perfection.

The Thompson’s frame is completed with your choice of seven finishes for a bespoke piece tailored to your space. For a silky matte feel, choose Handwaxed Ash to highlight the natural grain and character of the wood. Or, select from six lacquered hues for a custom stain with added protection. Due to the natural materials used, each piece will possess a unique, one-of-a-kind character and may slightly vary.

Can I order wood finish samples?

Wood finish samples for The Thompson are available for order here. Please note, variation in grain and texture is to be expected between your wood sample and final piece, given the natural materials used. We’ll be happy to refund your swatch purchase less 10% for handling if returned within 30 days of the original ship date.

What is the difference between having a fully upholstered headboard on The Thompson Canopy Bed and a headboard with muslin on the reverse side?

We offer two options for headboard upholstery–one in which the back is fully upholstered in your choice of fabric or leather, and one with a black muslin upholstered onto the back. If you plan to place your bed against a wall, you may opt for muslin upholstery on reverse; however, if you are floating your bed in a space, full upholstery is the right choice.

What kind of support is included for my mattress? Are any other components necessary?

The Thompson Canopy Bed is made with a system of hardwood slats milled from solid poplar wood. Each slat is 2.25” wide and spaced 3” apart along the foundation of the bed, and additionally secured with center support legs (1 for Queen sizes, 2 for King and Cal King).

With this highly durable foundation, Maiden Home beds do not require a box spring; however, a box spring can be accommodated if preferred.

Can I use an adjustable mattress or frame with The Thompson Canopy Bed?

Our beds were designed for use with our support system in mind, however many customers have used alternative support systems with success.

We are not able to confirm the compatibility of specific systems with Maiden Home frames. Please refer to our Bed Dimensions PDF for dimensions of the bed cavity to determine if your specific system will be compatible.

If you are interested in using an adjustable base, our design team can create a custom invoice for your order at designadvisors@maidenhome.com. This custom bed will be crafted without the interior side rails and will provide the open cavity needed to use your own support system. Please note that this customization renders your piece final sale, and your warranty will be voided should you choose to use a support system other than the one Maiden Home provides.

What is the recommended mattress height?

The Thompson Canopy Bed has a two inch inset into the frame for a mattress. Our styling recommendation for The Thompson Canopy Bed is a mattress between ten and twelve inches high. With a mattress at this height, there will be approximately eight to ten inches of the mattress exposed.

Will my mattress fit within the Thompson Canopy Bed?

The Thompson Canopy Bed is designed to fit most standard mattresses of the corresponding size, with an additional inch of length and width included to accommodate different types of bedding and slight differences in sizing between different mattress types. Our Bed Dimensions PDF includes the full dimensions for interior mattress space for your reference. We recommend comparing the dimensions of your mattress with this measurement to confirm fit.

Can I order The Thompson Canopy Bed as a headboard?

No, our beds are only available to order as a complete set with the side rails and footboard.

great beds

purchased 4 of these for nyc loft 1 bedrooms we rent out via Airbnb in downtown manhattan - mainly to corporate clients or folks around the film industry. very impressed with the quality of these beds and how great they look after a year plus of use. the leather has aged beautifully and have had guests ask where the beds are from. love buying from a local TriBeCa company for our guesthouses and the quality is 100% there. thanks

Couldn't be happier we chose The Thompson Canopy Bed

Spent a lot of time debating between this bed and the Martens Canopy at RH which a friend of ours has, and we could not be happier with our choice. The bed is beautiful from the rounding of the edges on the wood to the boucle we chose for the headboard. The delivery team put it together very quickly and all the seams etc are just perfect. Simply put we had a great experience. Very happy we chose MH over RH and feel like we have an heirloom quality piece of furniture we can enjoy for years to come. Thank you and we will be back for more!

A little miffed

While the overall construction and quality is excellent as promised, they seem to have lied about the quality of the slats. It states above on the website that "Each bed is made with a foundation of solid hardwood slats to ensure even distribution of weight and longevity of your mattress over time." However our bed was fitted with incredibly soft wood slats that provide little to no support. They bend with little pressure and are light enough to balance on one finger. I reached out to MH to ask about the support issues, but did not receive a reply. I had to ask our contractor what the material was. He says they are balsa wood, better suited to building a kite than supporting a mattress. He is replacing them with fir which we will have to pay additional for. I'm just disappointed that MH would do this when it is overall excellent. Unfortunately the slat quality, although not seen, is certainly felt and noticed. Please bring the same quality through every element. It's just annoying to have to deal with this for such a costly bed.

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your bed’s slats. We appreciate you bringing your concerns to our attention and would love to review further with our Design team. Quality is our top priority and we’ve specifically designed each of our beds to be crafted with a system of hardwood slats milled from solid poplar wood, providing a highly durable foundation. Our Customer Care team has been in touch to request additional information, and have followed up to ensure we’re taking expedient next steps. Please let us know of any questions in the meantime at support@maidenhome.com!
