When designing your living space, the seating styles can largely determine the room’s form, function, and expression. With a variety of seating options to choose from, it can often be overwhelming to understand how each piece works together.

If your space allows, a large sectional can provide an approachable way to design a room, giving a neutral base to easily layer in your personal style. But for a fresh styling perspective on a classic living room layout, our designers recommend playing with scale, proportion, and materiality by mixing sofa styles. Working in a variety of seating can create a designerly look by adding extra character and depth to the space. Discover our design tips below for mixing furniture styles, giving a look that’s rich in textural interest while maintaining an element of refined luxury.

For one-on-one help designing your space, our designers offer complimentary design services to help you achieve a curated look—from pairing multiple seating styles in a floor plan to working with mixed materials. Send us an email to start the conversation.

DEFINE A PALETTE

DEFINE A PALETTE

When designing a room with a variety of furniture styles, defining a color palette that is more neutral or tonal will help create a cohesive feel. Pay attention to the scale, shape, and function of each piece and find the common element to tie them together—whether it's color palette, wood tone, or shape and silhouette. With a tonal palette, you have more room to play with proportion, materiality, and mixing styles from a variety of design eras. Choosing upholstery and wood tones in a similar color story allows for the distinct shape and details of each piece to be showcased while keeping a cohesive balance to the look as a whole.

In this look, our designers paired similar tones in both fabric and wood finish, letting each piece showcase its unique design detailing while maintaining an overall cohesive feel. The Dune Sofa is upholstered in Bone Performance Textured Linen, a true white that seamlessly pairs with both warm and cool tones, while The Muir Sofa adds a touch of contrast in a subtle off-white Alabaster Performance Chenille. Both materials have a neutral base tone which allows them to harmoniously work together without having to be an exact match. WORK IN A BOLD STATEMENT

WORK IN A BOLD STATEMENT

With a cohesive palette in mind, adding statement seating in a bold silhouette can create a look that's both design-forward and adaptable. Our designers recommend the statement-making Muir Sofa for its sculptural shape and mixed materiality. Custom made by master woodworkers, The Muir's platform silhouette with custom layered cushioning and a built-in side table create an artful showpiece that's as beautiful as it is comfortable. Its balanced proportions and use of mixed materials allow for ample design versatility when pairing with other seating styles. And with over 50 fabrics to choose from and five custom wood finishes, The Muir Sofa is a conversation-starting piece that sets the tone for a curated room that feels intentionally designed.

FIND THE BALANCE

FIND THE BALANCE

In working with a room of mixed furniture styles, it's important to maintain a healthy balance of similar tones and contrasting textures, especially with the finishing pieces. Adding The Morro Nesting Table Set to a room not only provides versatile function in the space, but adds warmth and texture with its handcrafted solid wood frame. Available in four custom wood finishes, The Morro Table offers a striking shape that adds a unique depth and interest, while its natural materiality and minimalist design work with a variety of styles. Shown here in Driftwood, The Morro coordinates beautifully with the Natural Ash finish of The Muir Sofa, while keeping a distinct style of its own.
