Interior photographer and stylist, Keyanna Bowen, of East and Lane describes her aesthetic as organic coastal—gravitating towards light and airy tones, organic textures, and a subtle coastal feel.

We chatted with Keyanna about her newly renovated Cape Cod home—where she chose pieces with modern silhouettes, texturally luxe fabrics, and sink-in comfort to create an inviting and serene space, perfectly suited to her style.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR HOME AND HOW YOU'VE APPROACHED THE DESIGN AND RENOVATION OF IT.

Our home is actually a rental. It’s an adorable 1950’s cape cod with lots of charm and character, but the interior is dated, so I’ve partnered with the landlord and he agreed to fund the updates I want to make within a certain budget. Even though it’s a rental, I still approach the design as if I own it. I’m a firm believer that just because you live in a rental doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make it feel like your home. I describe my design aesthetic as “organic coastal”—it’s light and airy, with organic tones and textures, and a subtle coastal vibe. Over the last few years I’ve been finding ways to update each space and infuse it with my style and personality.

WHAT INSPIRED THE DESIGN REFRESH WITHIN YOUR LIVING ROOM?

WHAT INSPIRED THE DESIGN REFRESH WITHIN YOUR FORMAL LIVING ROOM?

Prior to living here, my husband and I lived in a small condo and most of our furniture was from cheap, big-box stores or hand-me-downs. So when we moved into this house, buying all new furnishings and decorating the living room was a top priority. The home is small—about 1700 sq ft—and this is the only living/family room space. It’s also the first room you see from the entry. So I wanted this room to feel laid-back and casual enough for us to kick our feet up and watch TV, but also look welcoming and inviting for guests.

WHEN SELECTING FURNITURE FOR YOUR SPACE, WHAT WAS YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS?

WHEN SELECTING FURNITURE FOR THE SPACE, WHAT WAS YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS?

I think sometimes when you live in a rental or temporary residence, you are afraid to invest in furniture because you don’t know if the pieces will work in your next place, so you often compromise for cheaper or less than ideal furnishings until you find a more “permanent” residence. However, even though I’m renting, I knew I wanted quality furnishings that were well-made and could stand the test of time, and transition with me from place to place. The Dune Sofa had been on my wishlist for a while. I love its modern, yet classic silhouette and the flange detail. I knew that when it was time for me to design my living room that would be the perfect sofa for the space. I wanted to pair the sofa with an accent chair that looked comfortable and cozy, but didn't take up too much space. The Perry Chair hit all the marks. The bouclé fabric adds a layer of texture to this mostly white room and its petite silhouette keeps the room feeling spacious.

Working with Hannah from the Design Team was absolutely amazing! I am still very much a “newbie” in the interior design world, so having an expert I could consult with to ensure the pieces would look nice together and be the right size and scale for the space was so helpful and gave me even more confidence with my order.

I could not be happier with The Dune Sofa and The Perry Chair. I know this has been said many times by others, but The Dune is seriously the most comfortable sofa. Truly like sitting on a “cloud”. I’ve been so impressed with the quality and durability of the fabric. And since it’s a slipcover style sofa, it takes the stress and anxiety out of having a white sofa because I know I can just throw it in the wash. I’m equally as happy and impressed with The Perry Chair and spend most of my evenings lounging in it with a cup of tea and a good book.

TELL US WHERE YOUR PASSION FOR DESIGN AND INTERIORS CAME FROM.

I’ve always loved home & design. Even as a child I remember asking my mom to take me to open houses on the weekend, and sketch out floor plans on napkins. Unfortunately, I didn’t go to school for design, but showcasing my love for interiors is one of the reasons why I started my blog East & Lane, and got into Interior Photography.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOUR DESIGN STYLE LATELY?

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOUR DESIGN STYLE LATELY?

Over the past year, my design style has been in a constant state of evolution. Perhaps due to me being stuck indoors and spending more time on social media scrolling through so many design-related accounts. Although there is so much inspiration online, I've been trying to step away from devices and seek inspiration from my personal surroundings and experiences to ensure my aesthetic isn’t being too “influenced” by mainstream culture/design/trends.

WHAT HAS BEEN INSPIRING YOU LATELY IN DESIGN?

WHAT HAS BEEN INSPIRING YOU LATELY IN DESIGN?

Lately, I’ve been really inspired by colorful, maximalist spaces…which as a self-proclaimed neutral-loving minimalist has been very surprising. I heard an interesting analysis that the reason I/people may be craving more color in their home is because of quarantine, and prior to the pandemic we would get visual stimuli out in the world, so we wanted our houses to be calm and serene. But now since we’ve been trapped inside (with less stimuli), we crave color. Not sure if that’s been scientifically proven, but I’m learning to embrace this more maximalist side of myself and enjoying finding ways to incorporate more color and pattern into my home.
