To visit a faraway place that is steeped in luxurious surroundings and offers an elevated mental escape is exactly what we miss in a year as unpredictable as this. The surroundings transport you to an unfamiliar beauty and allow you to slip into a rich expanse of relaxation. From the coastal Italian escape of the Mezzatorre Hotel to the intimate Fogo Island Inn, high design hotels share one thing in common: it’s all in the details. With architecturally abundant features like scaling geometric structures that jut into a sea of slate and blue or thoughtful design that is an ode to its interior history, these destinations can inspire the exact escape we want within the walls of our homes.
Why not look to the vacations we rely on to help us escape for inspiration in bringing that design, comfort, and quality in our homes? We’ve showcased three luxurious hotel destinations to give your mind just the vacation it needs and took it a step further in showing you how to bring the design of these inspired landscapes home with you.
Fogo Island Inn
With breathtaking views atop a jagged, architectural bluff, sits the modern, stilted Fogo Island Inn just off the northeast coast of Newfoundland. To stay at Fogo Island Inn is to lose yourself in the expansive views of the North Atlantic Ocean. The scaling angular structure designed by architect Todd Saunders frames the rich, blue-hued views for hotel guests to truly get lost in.
Don’t be fooled by the stark modernism of its design. The hospitality at Fogo Island Inn brings the perfect contrast of warmth to its guests. Known for being the friendliest people on earth, the attention to detail and service is as expensive as the surrounding views. To warm it up another notch, Fogo Island Inn is a social business that exists to preserve the island’s history by employing the community and carrying on cultural traditions that have been nearing extinction. We can’t help but be inspired to bring the awe of this landscape and warmth of its culture into our homes.

The Mezzatore Hotel
On an island of an entirely different tone, lies a historic watch tower turned castle along the Gulf of Naples in Ischia, Italy. The Mezzatorre Hotel was recently revitalized by Creative Director, Marie-Louise Sciò. Taking a nod to the island’s heyday in the 70s and 80s, the hotel was redesigned with a hint of retro among draping light and views of the brilliant, sapphire-hued water below. The spa is perhaps what most took our breath away. It shines with the glamour of Capri, yet stands apart with a spunky personality of mauve pink accents and rich, emerald tile. The design of The Mezzatorre Hotel offers a nod to the playful romance of the 70s combined with the captivating soul of an Italian hillside escape. Who wouldn’t want to channel this inspired design?

Quinta Da Comporta
In anxious times as these, a healing retreat is a welcome respite. Designing with the intention of peace and rejuvenation lends itself to a palette of neutral hues that are rich in textural, inviting fabrics. You’ll find this design ethos embodied at Hotel Quinta da Comporta, a boutique hotel focused on wellness and sustainability along the west coast of Portugal.
Designed by renowned Portuguese architect, Miguel Câncio Martins, Hotel Quinta da Comporta offers a modern, bohemian feel meant to pay tribute to the region’s cultural heritage. The luxury is felt in its simplicity, especially when the design is as thoughtful as this. Using natural, environmentally friendly materials, the decor of the retreat weathers beautifully in its environment, lending a relaxed, yet elevated charm for all its guests. Designing a space that sets the tone for an elevated ease such as this is exactly the feel we want to capture within our own homes.
