Layers of Material & Space
The Lume Screen debuts as the third edition of Maiden Home’s Collectible Series. Designed in our Tribeca studio and realized individually in collaboration with famed French atelier Jouffre, the piece brings together expertise across distinct material disciplines.
The Lume Screen continues the ethos of Maiden Home’s Collectible Series, where material exploration meets a spirit of experimentation. For this edition, our focus centered on the interplay of Belgian linen, high-gloss lacquer, and mirror, and the challenge of bringing these materials together in a singular form. This curiosity led to a search for the finest artisans whose mastery could bring our material vision and engineered form to life.
We source the Citron Belgian Linen featured on the Lume from a century-old mill that produces some of the world’s finest linens. Its distinctive tone and texture became a defining element of the design—bringing warmth and tactility to the mirrored surface.
Adhering the linen to the wooden frame demanded a level of technical expertise that led us to Jouffre. The atelier is renowned for its upholstery craftsmanship, particularly in gainage, the centuries-old French technique of meticulously fitting and securing fabric to a hard surface.
The very qualities that drew us to Citron Belgian linen—its delicate weave, distinctive texture, and subtle tone—also made its application exceptionally precise. Even the slightest excess of adhesive can disrupt the weave or alter its color, requiring an intimate understanding of the material and an exacting hand.
Our exploration of Obsidian Lacquer began years earlier with the Leon Dining Armchair. On the Lume Screen, it finds a compelling counterpart in mirrored glass, bringing depth to the piece while amplifying its interplay of light and reflection.
In its finished form, the Lume Screen transforms traditional room division into a sculptural composition—creating layers of materials and space.
